Fernley, NV to Idaho Springs, ID – 687 miles
6:30AM – The dirt test is good. I make the decision to continue with the lighten load. I’m leaving some of my security in that pile in Brian’s garage but this was a good lesson for me on how extreme I am on overpacking of motorcycle trips.
I’m on the road at 7:20AM. Brian and Ray are happy to get rid of me and go out for breakfast.
My plan is to head east on 80 through Winnemucca, Elko, Wells, to Salt Lake then take 15 north up into Canada.
At 150 miles, I notice that my fuel gauge is below half! If my fuel cell is transferring properly via gravity feed, the fuel gauge should be reading ¾. By 200 miles, I’m on blinking reserve. I pull off the side of the road and check to make sure the aux tank still has the fuel. Yup! I have 4 gal in the aux cell and it is not moving into the main tank. I check the fuel filter and it’s clean. I blow into the filler nozzle and gas move into the stock tank. I ride to Battle Mountain and fill up the front tank, head east again. Once again the fuel doesn’t transfer! I stop in Wendover find an air hose and blow into the filler cap. Over a gallon moves into the front tank. The line is not plugged. I fill both tanks and cross into Utah over the Salt Flats. Then like magic, the world is good again … fuel is transferring and the gauge is happy, I’m happy … I can ride ~400 miles without stopping for gas.
5:30PM – I’m so behind! I stop early today to get the blog updated and to get all the subscribers cleared.
