Day04-We are TWO!, Thu, Dec 2, 2010

Some things are not meant to be.

Dean: At first light as we pack our bikes, Bob informs us that his eye is worse!

Bob: A Short Ride:  The problem with the right eye returned as I was riding down from Houston yesterday, a short but ominous hop.  I tried the usual solutions, unguents, and ointments with small success.  This morning it isn’t any better.  If that were the only thing lurking in the background to nail my trip, it would be enough.  There is something obviously mechanical going on with this ignorant eye that still eludes discovery.  I need to have that fixed, and I don’t want to face having it done in Mexico.  I’ve already had general surgery there; that was experience enough.

Additionally, my computer, not three weeks old, has begun booting up with the legendary Microsoft Blue Screen of Death.  Sometimes it stumbles onto the Windows screen; most of the time it doesn’t.  The thought of facing the next three weeks without the machine is disconcerting.

I told Dean and Lisa that I don’t believe in omens, but I do believe that the eye is a trip stopper.  I can’t continue in this condition.  So I’m going to bail, regretfully and painfully, but it’s the best of the few alternatives available.  I wish them the best of luck.  They are resilient and resourceful travelers.  This would have been a lot of giggles.  For them it still will be.  For me not so much.  Maybe next year.

Dean: The last week has been a roller coaster ride with never ending swoops and heart-felt drops.  The drama continues with Bob making his “no go” decision” this morning and departed home to Florida.

Lisa and I are regrouping and plan on crossing the border later today.

Its tough gettin’ old, Bob. DAMHIK.

Bob, sorry to hear that your eye did not heal enough to allow you to continue. I feel your pain, physically as well as due to making the decision to abandon the adventure. Hope you can get things resolved quickly.

    Dean the unstoppable!
We’ll hook up in South America and then we’ll be three! Enjoy Mexico.

Holy Gee! The light at the end of the tunnel is most obviously a train!

Sorry to hear about Bob’s eye. Bad luck, that, but a good decision overall. I know Lisa and Dean will recover nicely. The payoff at the end with such adversity at the beginning will be even more worthwhile, I’m sure.

    Ride Safe, you two.

  • Bob Kunihiro

Wow. That’s a real bummer that there’s only the two of you left. Stay safe and ride cautiously.

  • Steve H.

…Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. Press on!

  • Lisa S.

Adventures are never fun while you’re having them. Think of the stories you’ll tell!

  • Hey Lisa and Dean – you’ve done the hardest part – taking that first step out into the unknown. I won’t say it gets easier, but you’ll learn how to handle it a bit better. There are border crossings, and there are BORDER CROSSINGS! Some are heaps better than others, a couple were basically an absolute breeze. Take care, ride safe. Watch out for the TOPES. They can be brutal when hit at speed.
