Day02-Shake Down 2 & Repositioning Day, Tue, Nov 30, 2010

Cold, cold, cold!

Start & Stop:  Gilbert, Arizona (5:30 AM Mountain) to Junction Texas (8:30 PM Central)

Mileage: 822 (1323 km)

Route:  Gilbert AZ-70 south through Globe, Safford, joined I-10 at Lordsburg.  I-10 through Las Cruces AZ, El Paso TX, Van Horn TX, Pecos TX, Ozona TX, ending at Junction TX

Weather:  Freezing cold!  Below 32 F most of the morning.

Lodging:

Fuel:  $2.75/gal

Dean: Over the last two days we’ve been repositioning to McAllen TX.  Lisa and I are riding in from SoCal.  Bob is approaching from the northeast, McComb MS.

After planning this ride for 2 years what we did not plan for was 22 degree F at sunrise in Globe AZ!!!  Yes, we had all our electrics on.  But what we didn’t expect was ice forming on the inside of Lisa’s face shield!!!  We stopped at a defunct roadhouse with light brown coffee or brown water (all that matters was it was HOT!) and the ice melted on the table.

The rest of the day was uneventful, but the 80 MPH West Texas speed limit made our 2-day rolling average over 70 MPH.

Tonight in Junction TX the low is suppose to be 19 degree F!!!

We’re meeting Bob Higdon tomorrow in McAllen TX.  We have no were to go but down!!

Glad you made it to Texas. I’ve checking now and then where you guys are. Stay safe.

Make sure that Bob gets the biggest sausage patty at breakfast. Trust me, it will save much trouble over the breakfast table.

Were the vents on Lisa’s helmet open when it froze over?

281 South was very heavily patrolled the last time I was through there by LEO’s and INS. Be especially aware through Alice and Falfurias as the locals are on the “revenue” bandwagon big time. It is after all Christmas season and everyone can use a little extra “mordida”.

Reminds me of my days in college in the northeast, when I sold my car to buy my first motorcycle. You had to hold your breath when you pulled up at a stoplight, because if you breathed out, the vapor would condense on the inside of your faceshield and it would immediately freeze.

  • Looks like your about to cross the border… Now the adventure really begins! Stay safe and enjoy it!

Ok, looks like you made McAllen for final R&R/shakedown before the fun starts.
Hope everything checks out so the real Adventure begins! Have a great & safe journey!
