Day12-7/2/10-Fri, Wiseman, AK

Deadhorse, AK to Wiseman, AK – 253 miles

I didn’t fulfill one of my goals.  I did not go swimming with polar bears.  It was a choice between taking a tour to the Arctic Ocean or working on some bike problems.  In order to leave this morning, we had to take care of some minor motorcycle problems.

We stayed in the Prudhoe Bay Hotel.  The cheapest option are double rooms with a community sinks, showers, toilets (just like the dorms).  The rate is $110 each which includes all-you-can eat meals in a cafeteria and 24-hour drinks, sandwiches, chips, fruit, etc. Friday morning we pack to leave.  We both have some bolts to replace.

We ride over to the Prudhoe Bay General Store which has a hardware/parts store on the bottom floor.   They have everything we need and the counter guy doest charge us for the one bolt, washer, and lock nut we need.

On our way back to the hotel we see two Harley Dresser and the guy’s are taking photos in front of the hotel sign.  Yes, you can ride a Harley to Deadhorse!!! We met Carlos Bettin and Carlos Builes from Columbia!!  They shipped their bike from Columbia to Florida and did an Ultimate Coast to Coast.

10:30 am left Deadhorse in cold, heavy fog.  Again the first 50 miles is the most challenging with the loose gravel and tracks.  The fog lifts at 40 miles and we ride into clear blue skies and towering clouds.  We take our time photographing the sites.

By the river we see a small group of Muskox.  So far I’ve seen dozens of caribou, the small heard of muskox, a lynx, a moose with antlers in a lake.

The ride south on the north slop is familiar but different.  Every time we stop to take photos the mosquitos are amazing!

The mosquito's are pretty bad!! Here is a swarm around Jack's face.

We have an uneventul rode to Wiseman where we stop at the Arctic Getaway B&B.

This is our cabin.  Very basic and rustic.  Small kitchen and one bathroom for 7 people.  Beds are European style with comforter blanket and bottom sheet only.

We are meeting Jack’s friends Paulie Heydemann and Mary Gehm where we are sharing a section of a cabin.  They are from Miami FL.  Paulie is riding a Kawasaki Concours (194,000 miles) and his goal was the Arctic Circle.  Mary flew in to Fairbanks and is following him in a rental SUV.  They are both heading south back to Fairbanks.

The second couple is Michael and Malissa Wike riding 2-up on a VStrom.  They are on their way up to Deadhorse.
