Day55-Slow but steady!, Sun, Feb 20, 2011

From the west coast to the east coast!

Start & Stop: Esquel, Argentina to Comodoro Rivadavia

Mileage:  370 miles

Hotel: Comodoro Hotel, 9 de Julio 770, U9000CZF Comodoro Rivadavia, Chubut, Republica Argentina

Fuel: $3.267 Argentine Peso /l liter ($0.82 USD/1 liter) or $3.09 per gal!

Currency Exchange: $1 USD = $4.02 Argentine Peso

Dean: Our day started in the western Argentine mountains then crossed into the flat desert and finally to the eastern coast.  Today we saw a dozen or more adventure style riders going north.  The entire day was blue skies.  From horizon to horizon, not a single cloud ever appeared.

The entire day was on paved roads except for a couple miles of roadwork.

Ron Ayres says the next leg will be the windy leg.  From Comodoro Rivadavia to Rio Gallegos ~475 miles along the eastern coast.

Lisa: so, today was gorgeous. we had a hint of what’s to come with the winds but honestly, although we don’t know what’s ahead but after riding the Mojave so many times we feel at least a little prepared. But gosh, at this point, who knows? With all the twists and turns in the road today, the wind also moved around and at times we had headwinds, side winds and sometimes even (my fave) tail wind. It’s amazing when the wind switches and all of a sudden it’s super quiet – it’s the strangest thing.

Today we had a couple of miles of road construction and I do not enjoy sand so frankly I have more than a little trepidation about the coming days, especially with the crappy tires we have. They have worn super well but they are not dirt/gravel/mud/wet friendly tires. I miss my knobbies.

Dean is doing a fantastic job managing his pig and we moved right along.  Today was my day to slow us up as I struggled all day today with dehydration and felt some fairly serious effects.  Just for safety, I needed to stop.  A lot.  I bought 4 liters of water and drank most of it, then needed to stop to offload it.  Cripes.  I hydrated all day and all night tonight as well as took some of my daughter’s electrolyte pills handed out by her Athletic Department.  We’ll see tomorrow how those work on this old bod.

You two are doing great. Keep up the good work. At the very least, Dean will be ready for the Hopeless Class in a future IBR.

Well, I’m glad things are slowly working out. We’ll all be happy when you hit your final destination!
At the office, we’ve been pretty busy (thank goodness for that). Derek and I are heading to Vancouver, Canada and after that more work with MedForce on March 4th.
    Ride safely.

    Lisa,

hearing you describe yourself as old makes me feel young..
I’ve given the last several years to this project and denied myself what I’d rather be doing.. I am in awe of you guys going off and actually doing it. Yes, I am going to Mars, but you guys are gong to the ends of the Earth.

Beer, Burgers – and now…. uh… electrolyte pills from a Univ. Athletic Department –
Grandfather Dean – don’t panic, but be VERRRRY careful and observant. Should Lisa start growing facial hair – ask you for the use of your razor – start saying things like “I’ll Be Back” in a vaguely Austrian accent – Wake up wanting MEAT and… and… do I have to say more?

Lord what have you all done? – Lisa with Roid Rage. This is worse than when the Japanese opened that vent in the ocean and Godzilla came creeping out – or when they opened that cave and Mothra showed up. LIke banging on the big assed gong – and calling Kong.

    Say it aint so !!!!!

Wish I had something creative and original to say, but I don’t. So, stay hydrated and keep sharing your adventures. Love reading this. Stay safe. xo

Hi Lisa -I was visiting Korinna and Mom in Florida, needed a little warm weather.
Honestly, couldn’t wait to return to my office today to catch up on your travels since I left without
a computer on purpose-good to disconnect once in a while. I was on the edge of my secretary chair-
very exciting challenge. Can’t wait for the next post. David says hello-
