Day31–, Lima, Peru, Thu, Jan 27, 2011

Start & Stop: Barranca, Peru to Lima, Peru

Mileage: 125 miles

Hotel: Hotel Miraflores Lodge, Colon 230 Miraflores, Lima Lima 18, Peru

Fuel: Regular: $13.80 Sol/gal or $4.98 USD/gal

Dean: Quick 2.5 hour run from Barranca into Lima.  Coastal cool, many long straight runs with slow sweepers.  Can’t tell of the desert goes to the ocean or the ocean sand goes to the mountains.  Miles and miles of sand dunes and as far as the eye can see.

Lisa: Nothing quick about getting “into” Lima. A city of 7.5 million is never going to be a cake walk and we proved that today.

Dean: Parts of Lima traffic were horrible.  Since there is much construction, there are many detours and than makes the GPSs go crazy!  Once traffic slows to a crawl, it’s every driver for himself.  Pretty much anything goes as far as lane changes, honking, etc.  Oh, did we mention there are no left-turn lanes on most of the major boulevards!  We made our normal wrong turns and many U-turns.  We did great considering the situation.  Patience, Patience, Patience!

Our pre-planning worked and the GPS took us within 1 block of our destination hotel.

We got to our hotel late morning.  Today was a catch-up and do a real laundry clothes wash, not a in-the-hotel-sink laundry.  The stench was getting too much.  The lavanderia was right around the corner.

Dean, Chino, Lisa

Rubin, Lisa & Chino on the mountain top overlooking Lima.

The night view was fantastic!

This cross can be seen from most sections of Lima.

Lisa: My oldest went to college with a Lima resident and today we met up with Chino and his driver Rubin. They were kind enough to give us an amazing auto tour of Lima, highlighting lots of the old town area and giving us a great history lesson as well. It was so nice to meet with locals and get their input and knowledge. Just a great afternoon for us and we are most grateful

Chino also knew where I could purchase waterproofing spray for our riding gear and we used it liberally on our freshly laundered jackets and pants. Now we’ll see how it works!!

We ate appetizers and some local Pisco drinks at a posh little restaurant together and in all it was a great afternoon for the rugged travelers.

Looking at the “hybred” format on the spotwalla: looks like your crossing a moonscape. DUDE! Too Cool!! =-)

Having trouble with a “rugged traveler” report that has photos of Joe Cool in a clean blue shirt and a senorita in a pink blouse…but it still early here.
    :)
Sounds like y’all had a great stop over in Lima. At least you got something in return for all that college tution $$.
    Just kidding!

Oh, and get used to the $5/gal. At the rate things are going up here, that may be what you are paying in the states when you get home.

  • After awhile, you will start understanding what the different horn honks mean as there are different styles (a short blast, a quick tap, a lonnng blast)- a language all it’s own. Cabbies are always doing the quick tap horn to get the attention of a pedestrian to see if they want a ride- you hear it so much – you soon don’t notice the horns anymore (lol – yeah right)
Love your shorter format, the updates and photos when you can.

Dean, hope you get this message. Astrid Kunihiro from Santiago, Chile said to call her when you get to the city. Her cell number is: 569 93603455. Good luck and ride safe.

I see you are in Cuzco, Peru. I presume you are going to go see Machhu Picchu! That would be an epic day report! :)

We stayed at the Hotel Miraflores when we went to Macchu Picchu in 97! Nice neighborhood.
